Opportunities to Be Involved in Highline Schools

There are many opportunities to be involved with the Highline School District. Two have deadlines in the next few weeks.

With the start of the new school year, there are several opportunities for community members, parents, and students to be involved in the Highline School District. Two have deadlines very soon:

For more information, click the links below. Application forms are available on the district’s website.

Family Action Committee (FAC)

  • Deadline to apply: October 10, 2025
  • First meeting: October 24, 2025

Parents, guardians, and family members of Highline students are eligible to apply. Members are expected to:

  • Commit to a two-year term
  • Spend up to six hours per month (meetings plus subcommittee work)

The committee includes up to 40 members, drawn from all areas of the school district.

Superintendent’s Student Leadership Team (SSLT)

  • Deadline to apply: September 26, 2025
  • First meeting: October 25, 2025
  • Meetings: Monthly

Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors are eligible to apply. As the district notes: Superintendent Ivan Duran wants to hear from you!

Team members work directly with the Superintendent, bringing student voices into decision-making. The roughly 30 members are selected by application and lottery:

  • 4 from each of the four comprehensive high schools
  • 2 from the smaller high schools

Capital Facilities Advisory Committee (CFAC)

  • Next lottery: Fall 2026
  • Current status: Three specific slots on the website are listed as unfilled

This group advises the district on bonds and capital facilities. Membership is a mix of appointment and lottery:

  • About 20 slots are reserved for cities, community organizations, and employee groups
  • About 25 slots are filled by lottery, held every two years (last in fall 2024)

When mid-cycle openings occur, previous lottery applicants are contacted to see if they remain interested.

CFAC also selects two members of the Bond Oversight Committee, which monitors construction progress and implementation of bond plans. A bond vote may occur in 2026. Some CFAC meetings allow for public comment and are open for public viewing.

Committees, Curricula & More

  • In past years, Highline had a parent advisory group for the Highly Capable Program, but it now appears defunct.
  • During curriculum adoptions (Math, English, and other subjects), specific adoption groups are formed. These dissolve after adoption, with no ongoing monitoring of results. These groups connect to the Instructional Materials Committee.

The district’s Connect With Us webpage also highlights:

  • Community partnerships
  • Career partners
  • Volunteer opportunities with the Community Engagement Board, which works to reduce student referrals to youth courts
