Burien is reviewing zoning north of NERA, between South 128th and 138th. With the city vague on its goals, residents are urged to engage early.
The City of Burien has launched a zoning review for the area north of the Northeast Redevelopment Area (NERA), between South 128th and South 138th Streets. While the rezone will guide future land uses—from jobs and housing to industrial or mixed-use development—the city has offered only ambiguous explanations for why this effort is being prioritized now.
Why it matters
Zoning in the North of NERA area could directly affect nearby neighborhoods, traffic, and environmental protections. Recent conflicts between Burien’s Comprehensive Plan, zoning updates, and the Shoreline Master Plan highlight the risks of waiting until late in the process—making early community input essential.
The city has noted that “one goal of this project is to rename the project area in partnership with the community based on the preferred alternative.” However, the city has not clearly explained why this rezoning is being prioritized now, leaving residents with questions about its purpose and potential impacts.

One Response
I went up there today around 11 and while other departments were there planning was missing. They said a planner might be there at 2 but were not sure. Not very effective if this is how there going to get information to the public. If they cant provide staff at least be smart enough to fake it.
