Burien Councilmember Linda Akey Earns Certificate of Municipal Leadership

BURIEN, WA – Burien City Councilmember Linda Akey has successfully earned a Certificate of Municipal Leadership from the Association of Washington Cities (AWC), a prestigious recognition for city and town elected officials who complete comprehensive training in key areas of municipal governance.

The AWC’s Certificate of Municipal Leadership (CML) program acknowledges officials who demonstrate proficiency in five essential topics: roles, responsibilities, and legal requirements; public sector resource management; community planning and development; effective local leadership; and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

“Being a city leader in Washington is a complex job,” said AWC CEO Deanna Dawson. “Through our CML program, we provide elected officials with the knowledge they need to operate within the law, plan for the future, manage funds, build strong relationships, and foster more equitable communities.”

Councilmember Akey completed more than 30 hours of specialized training to earn the certificate, showcasing her dedication to effective leadership and professional growth. Akey, who was elected to the Burien City Council in November 2023 and began her term in January 2024, has a strong background in community service. Before her election, she spent four years serving on the Burien Business and Economic Development Partnership (BEDP).

In addition to her duties as City Councilmember, Akey represents Burien on several important appointed committees, including the Highline Forum, Soundside Alliance, South County Area Transportation Board, and the Burien LEAD Policy Coordinating Group.

“I am pleased to have completed this portion of training and education so I can be the best leader possible for Burien,” said Akey. “AWC provides a wealth of information and opportunities, and I look forward to continuing my professional growth and development as an elected leader.”

Akey’s accomplishment underscores her commitment to serving her community with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the complexities of municipal leadership.

AWC serves its members through advocacy, education, and services. Founded in 1933, AWC is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan corporation that represents Washington’s 281 cities and towns before the state legislature, the state executive branch, and with regulatory agencies. AWC also provides training, data and publications, and programs such as the AWC Employee Benefit Trust, AWC Risk Management Service Agency, AWC Workers’ Comp Retro, AWC Drug and Alcohol Consortium, and AWC GIS Consortium.
