Stephanie Mora’s Interview with John Curley: What’s at Stake in Burien’s November Election

Councilmember Stephanie Mora’s interview with John Curley highlights Burien’s election choices on homelessness, DESC, crime, and council direction.

BURIEN — On Aug. 21, 2025 Councilmember Stephanie Mora, running for re-election, joined broadcaster John Curley for a wide-ranging interview on the future of Burien. Topics included the council’s policy direction, homelessness and DESC, crime, and sidewalks.

The discussion underscored how Mora views the past two years of council decisions and what could shift depending on November’s results. Progressive candidates have indicated they may work to reverse ordinances passed by the current council, setting up a clear choice for voters.

The Urbanist recently published an article on Mora’s opponent, which we will include separately, giving residents both perspectives before the election.

Watch the full interview below.

Editor’s note: This article accompanies the full video of the Aug. 21 interview. We’ll link to the opponent feature from The Urbanist separately so readers can review both perspectives.

  1. Rocco is just a puppet with no sound ideas, just Progressive talking points as he sucks up to his masters and plots to ruin Burien with bombastic ideas and outside Activist agendas.

    1. We plan to share a recent article from The Urbanist, which outlines how the progressive slate of Progressives in Burien – Rocco, Moore, Mendez and Garcia – intends to reverse the public safety minded accomplishments of the current council. This includes the recent camping restrictions.

  2. Great interview Stephanie Mora. Completely on board with treatment first, then housing. The DESC building in downtown Burien is a blight on Burien and a disaster for rehab.

Would like to see data on a variety of issues in the building published at least monthly to obtain some factual idea of success or failure. Say, how many ODs, how many deaths, how many police calls, what does this building and “residents” cost the city of Burien, how many “residents” are being treated , how many treated “residents” are successful, what are the turnover of staff numbers, what credentials do staff members have, ….?

Also, what is the near-term, mid-term, and long-term forecast for reducing the homeless populations? Can we even afford to treat them?

If we continue to lose small businesses, what makes anyone think Burien has a future?

Clearly Burien is in a better place than we were a few years ago with tents and homeless people everywhere.

Turns out that few people seriously think we can integrate homeless populations with working and contributing populations.

Certainly something has to be done that works. If people refuse treatment, why should the taxpayers pay for their housing?

    1. Re: stats on Burien’s DESC, a FOIA request to DESC headquarters oughta provide that data.

  3. Burien.news please post this on the website Nextdoor I’d like to see what the other residents of Burien are thinking. Stephanie has our vote 100% but I feel if “those” others get voted in the City of Burien is doomed.

    1. Thank you Burien Rez – Please feel free to repost on Nextdoor. This is worth sharing!

  4. If you miss the days of sex trafficking, overdoses, mayhem, drug dealers, tortured small businesses, frightened and threatened residents, sidewalks filled with garbage and more; then the progressives are definitely the candidates for your vote. If you appreciate the progress our city council, mayor, and city manager have made; then vote for people with a plan. They are looking out for Burien and its citizens. Many people have been helped by service organizations who offer real solutions. None of this has anything to do with your feelings about the federal government. This is our city to save or destroy. We get to decide in November. Remember to vote!
