“Thank you, veterans, for your service to our country and for your continued involvement after completing your service…”
These thoughts popped into my mind during the annual Veterans Day ceremony at the Des Moines Memorial Drive ceremony, held at the memorial located on the Sunnydale School site on Monday, November 11, 2024.
Chris Plyman of the American Legion Post in Burien shared some of the history of the post in Burien. Members of the Exchange Club in Burien handed out flags for all attendees. Several audience members told stories of their service in the military, while others told about parents, grandparents, or other family members who served.

While there was no rain during the ceremony, the chill in the air made me think about how comfortable we are today compared to the conditions military members had to endure. A little wind, temperature in the 50s, and then some rain when walking to cars afterward is nothing compared to the mud of trenches in World War I, the smells of the topics that some attendees mentioned, and the physical harm from exposure to Agent Orange (one attendee mentioned this was a cause of early death for her father-in-law).
Consider attending the Memorial Day and Veterans Day events each year. This is a great time to say thanks to veterans for their service as well as to learn a little more about our community’s history.
From Burien. News article posted November 8, 2024:
DMMDPA President Rose Clark told us, “World War I ended at 11:00 AM on the 11th day of the 11th month, November. This sets the date to commemorate the end of the ‘war to end all wars.’ “
She added, “We are excited to welcome Brian Trautman and the Burien Exchange Club this year. Chris Plyman of the American Legion will be our speaker. Kate Bysheim will use her beautiful voice to perform the Star-Spangled Banner. Also, we extend special thanks to Transform Burien; Paul Ott always provides tables and chairs for the ceremonies. They serve a special mission in our community.”
After the ceremony, people lingered inside the school to view displays on the history of Des Moines Memorial Drive and to share conversations and snacks with friends and neighbors.

What a poorly written article. It failed to mention that the ceremony is presented EVERY YEAR since 2012 by the Des Moines Memorial Preservation Association. Inside the school are wonderful exhibits and displays. The group also has a ceremony every Memorial Day. Former Burien City Council member Rose Clark is the current President.
I just added photos and a link to 11/8/24 article which included a quote from Rose Clark. Thanks for the feedback!
