Here in Burien, honoring our neighbors’ rich cultural diversity and traditions is an important way we respect each other and build healthy relationships. Today is the Lunar New Year, and begins the “Year of the Dragon.” The dragon, which symbolizes good luck, strength, intelligence, and good fortune, also carries rich historical and cultural significance, especially in China.

Lunar New Year is the beginning of the new year based on the lunar calendar, which follows the lunar phase. Another variation is when it follows the lunisolar calendar and is based on both the lunar phase and the solar year. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, where the new year is always celebrated on the same day (January 1), the Lunar New Year jumps around, depending on the cycles of our heavenly luminaries. It generally falls in late January or February. This year, it is February 10!
The Lunar New Year is celebrated worldwide by many cultures, including Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese, each having unique traditions, foods, gifts, and other celebratory events. Depending on where you are, the day may have alternate names: “Chinese New Year,” “Spring Festival,” or also in China, “Guo Nian.”

This year, the Burien City Council gave a Lunar New Year Proclamation on February 5, 2024, to help celebrate.
The Council also honored the Korean-American Community with a Proclamation on January 22, 2024.
Burien-News wishes everyone a
Happy Lunar New Year!
