Early in the school year, we published information on free tutoring options provided by the King County Library System (KCLS). However, some students (or adults) may opt for additional tutoring services, test proctoring, homeschool support, or foundational reading and math skills.
If extra help is needed, private tutoring is available in the Highline area. Two we’re aware of are Highline Tutoring and Kumon. Some may also find tutors by visiting Highline College, where private individuals will post notices. Here’s an overview of two options that have permanent facilities.
Highline Tutoring
Highline Tutoring is located at 245 SW 152nd St, Suite A, Burien, WA 98166, and it has been in operation since the 1980s.
Owner/ Director Wendy Meyers-Wenger has a team that combines homework support with their curriculum and materials. She states, “Most importantly, we are a true family-run business that believes the parents, students, and tutors need to work together for a successful conclusion. We pride ourselves on being that tutoring agency the parents can trust and feel welcome to sit and watch the session or ask questions.”
Highline Tutoring serves K-12 and even some college and adult learners. They recently won an award from a national organization called “Helping Girls with STEM Classes,” and Wendy was named Citizen of the Year in Burien in 2017.
In addition to tutoring, Highline Tutoring also proctors tests that some online schools require. They work cooperatively with Family Academy Private School to set up homeschool programs that match family values and classes as needed on a range of subjects.
For example, the Highline School District does not allow any middle school students to take Algebra I. Students have to wait until high school. Through the Family Academy program, students who are ready can take Algebra I and other classes and earn high school credits recognized by the State of Washington. This allows students a more flexible schedule in high school or prepares them for Running Start.
Contact them via their website, Facebook page, or phone (206) 242-0245.
Kumon Math and Reading Center of Burien
Kumon is located at 14200 1st Ave S., Suite B, Burien, WA 98168.
Kumon was founded initially in Japan and is a worldwide organization with over 20,000 locations. The focus is teaching math (from elementary to high school Calculus) and reading skills. They assist students who want to “learn ahead,” covering material before it is taught in school, as well as students who need assistance in mastering content.
They serve up to 12th-grade students. Younger years are one-on-one, while older instruction is in small groups. Students are in person two days a week at the Kumon Center and then work on assignments on other days. The focus is on foundational skills, not support for specific homework or current classes. They have an extensive worksheet-based curriculum, which you can see in the center.
Kumon has been open in Burien for a little over a year. Center director Lisa Peters can be reached via email or phone at (206) 360-0444. Their website offers a free assessment.
Other Options
Other tutoring options may also exist, including private tutors or Highline College students.
